Modern Tool Square History
Modern Tool Square’s story dates back to the late 19th century, when it first opened as The People’s Market — one of Erie’s earliest enclosed markets. With 125 stalls, it became a bustling hub where farmers and shoppers connected, parades passed by, and community events flourished.
In 1902, the Modern Tool Company moved in, eventually taking over the entire building. For decades, the company expanded and produced tools, dies, and even ventured briefly into automobiles with the Payne-Modern car, known for its craftsmanship but limited by high costs.
By the mid-20th century, the building shifted tenants, housing
manufacturers like the Daka Paper Company until it fell vacant. Rather than demolish it, community leaders worked to preserve the structure, earning it a spot on the National Register of Historic Places.

In 1986, the site was reborn as Modern Tool Square, a mixed-use space for apartments, shops, and offices. Today, ongoing restoration continues to celebrate its industrial past while reestablishing it as a vibrant landmark in the heart of Erie.
